Catch Up Post — Part 6

We’ll call this one the “George Halvorson, first reform your own organization” Edition.

An Elite Notary explains why it is so difficult to obtain legal representation in California in medical malpractice cases. Hint: it’s all about MICRA and mandatory binding arbitration, and claims against Kaiser have decreased 20% as a result. Just the legal filings, [...]

Catch Up Post — Part 3

So many scandals, so little time. Enjoy Part 3 of our belated Kaiser Permanente News Roundup.

Kaiser involved in Pay-to-Play scheme intended to provide lobbyists with off-the-record access to Obama administration officials, members of Congress, and the Washington Post’s reporters and editors. So what else is new? The Colorado Division of Insurance fined Kaiser $367,000 [...]

Catch Up Post — Part 2

Part 2 of the Kaiser Permanente stories we missed during our hiatus from posting:

After an initial refusal by Kaiser, California Department of Managed Health Care officials finally obtained the documents needed to complete investigation of a complaint that call center scripts sometimes lead to misdiagnoses and delayed care. Two Bay Area residents filed a [...]

Catch Up Post — Part 1

So many Kaiser stories have crossed our desk during the time we were not posting regularly that it would be impossible to put them all in one entry. The following is Part 1 of our attempt to catch up (we’ll add these to the Horror Stories pages later). Some of them were widely reported at [...]

Another case of missing records and unnecessary death at Kaiser Permanente

Received from a loving husband who lost his wife at the hands of Kaiser, only to be put through the full “Kaiser Treatment,” consisting of stonewalling, mutilated medical records and attempts to discredit him. Unfortunately he isn’t the first.

Another mother buries her child thanks to Kaiser Permanente

This heartbreaking story arrived in our in box a few days ago. There is only one thing we can think of that is more tragic than a mother having to bury her child, and that is having to live with the knowledge that the death occurred unnecessarily at the hands of the doctors entrusted to save him. Justice rarely prevails in these situations, because the system has long been stacked against patients and in favor of corporate abuse of money and power. We ask our readers to keep Sean Berlin in heart and mind as they witness KP CEO George Halvorson making his rounds, touting Kaiser-style health care “reform” for all… because your child could be next. Hamid Safari: Kaiser tried to bribe baby-killing doctor

How do you like that? Only at Kaiser can you kill two babies and endanger countless others, only to be handed $2 million of member money to quietly resign. The pattern should be glaringly obvious by now. Kaiser always tries to lie and buy its way out of a scandal, and only does the right [...]

Hamid Safari: Too little too late

[Kaiser Permanente had no intention of suspending this murdering doctor, and did so only because CMS rejected Kaiser's initial plan of correction (pdf).]

From the LA Times:

Kaiser suspends accused doctor

Co-workers questioned the competency of Hamid Safari, who handled high-risk pregnancies at a Fresno hospital.

By Charles Ornstein and Tracy Weber, Los Angeles Times [...]

Administrator at Kaiser’s Fresno hospital steps down

[This update to the Hamid Safari case came out a few days ago. We're happy to see a resignation come from this situation, and we're hearing rumors that there might be another one that hasn't been announced yet. This is a change for Kaiser. Usually what we hear are a lot of denials, and some [...]

Kaiser pays $3.2 million in birthing malpractice case

[It's late and I'm tired, so I'm posting this without commentary. I'll add more information as the news stories start trickling in tomorrow. But whew! 3.2 million.]

From the OC register:

Kaiser pays $3.2 million in birthing malpractice case

A now 14-year-old girl wasn’t breathing when she was born at the Anaheim hospital.
